Intruder is the final quest in The Witcher: Monster Slayer. It ends the first season of quests. It is a direct continuation of The Great Mushrooming quest.
Walkthrough
This quest is unlocked after The Great Mushrooming and Sins of our Fathers are completed. It begins with a message brought by Dehael. Mayor Goronwy calls you for an urgent meeting.
The mayor informs you that a local family of farmers has been killed by a monster. Go to the marked location and examine the crime scene. It turns out that the killer is the frightener. After the investigation, the monster appears and the fight begins.
The frightener is a very tough opponent - an extreme level legendary monster. It's vulnerable to silver and strong attacks, so use of a good silver sword (like Melltith, Ursine or Griffin swords), more than 1 booster potion (like Thunderbolt, Cat, Petri's Philter, Swift), insectoid oil and preparing a few Moon Dust bombs is advised.
- The frightener is slain - You find a pin on the monster's body, which you decide to show to the mayor. Before talking to Goronwy, a masked sorcerer appears. He orders you to return the pin. You can ask him questions, but he will not answer any. It doesn't matter whether you agree to return the pin or not: in the first case, the sorcerer takes it and disappears, in the second case, he stuns the witcher, takes the pin and disappears.
- The frightener wins - Thorstein suggests asking Vesemir for advice. The witcher offers you an antidote for the frightener venom, but the potion requires collecting archespore sap. While looking for an archespore to slay, you meet Dehael. The boy asks many questions about being a witcher. You can advise him what to do in case of encountering a monster or dismiss him. How you handle talking to Dehael may influence later stages of the quest. After obtaining the archespore sap, a masked sorcerer appears. He offers you gold in exchange for waiting 24 hours with killing the frightener. If the offer is refused, he disappears. If accepted, he orders you to return for the gold tomorrow. To fight the frightener again, follow the marker and use the antidote before the fight.
The quest has three endings:
- Refusing the sorcerer - the village remains intact, Dehael gives you the Dehael's Pride trinket.
- Deal with the sorcerer, ignoring Dehael - after 24 hours, the village is destroyed, you find Dehael's body, and the sorcerer pays for the contract. You receive a bloody sword trinket.
- Deal with the sorcerer, advicing Dehael - after 24 hours, the village is destroyed, but you don't find Dehael's body, and the sorcerer pays for the contract.
In the last 2 variants, you can also track down and kill the frightener, and then return to the surviving mayor for the reward. You will receive 50 coins.
Journal entry
- The mayor promised he'd send someone to me about a contract on the frightener.
- Goronwy wanted to hire me to kill the frightener, which had already slaughtered a family of farmers. I decided to make my way to the farm and take a look around.
- The mayor wasn't exaggerating. At the farm, we were met with a truly grisly sight - bodies strewn across the road, and blood running down the walls. The tracks - feet and an abdomen imprinted in the mud - made it obvious a frightener was responsible for the massacre. I followed its trail.
- AS THEY NEARED THE FARMHOUSE, THORSTEIN REGRETTED HIS HEARTY BREAKFAST. THE SIGHT OF THE GRISLY SCENE PAINTED IN RED BEFORE THEIR EYES THREATENED TO CALL THAT BREAKFAST BACK UP HIS GULLET.
- THE WITCHER BEGAN TO EXAMINE THE BODIES. ALL THE SIGNS INDICATED A FRIGHTENER - A DANGEROUS INSECTOID. THEY FOLLOWED IN ITS TRACKS.
- If the frightener is killed right away
- The frightener turned out to be a strong and dangerous opponent, but I managed to beat it after a difficult fight. Only when its body crashed to the ground did I realize just how powerful my opponent had been and how close I'd come to lying dead on the ground myself. Curiously, inside the frightener's body, I found an ornamental pin that was clearly emanating magic.
- THOUGH THE FIGHT WAS NO WALK IN THE WOODS. THE FRIGHTENER'S LIMP CORPSE EVENTUALLY FELL AT THE WITCHER'S FEET. AS HIS/HER BREATHING SLOWED, THE WITCHER STARTED EXAMINING THE BODY.
- HE/SHE KNEW FROM THORSTEIN'S POINTED GRUNTING BEHIND HIM/HER THAT HE/SHE COULD EXPECT A CONVERSATION WITH THE MERCHANT VERY SOON.
- After examining the carcass, Thorstein enthusiastically voiced his approval of my work. He seemed to understand why I wasn't planning on informing Goronwy about the sorcerer.
- Right after I left the mayor, I ran into a masked sorcerer dressed in the elven style. He was very interested in the pin I'd found inside the frightener's corpse.
- Refusing the offer
- He wanted to buy it from me, but I refused, so he took it for himself after blinding me with a spell.
- Agreeing to the offer
- He wanted to buy it from me, and I agreed, so he took it for himself and disappeared.
- After all these twists and surprises, Thorstein and I went into the nearest inn with great pleasure. Chilled beer in hand, we celebrated a successfully-completed contract - and the future started to look somehow rosier. We decided to stay in Dol Tirthana just a little longer.
- AFTER THE UNEXPECTED ENCOUNTER WITH THE SORCERER, IT WAS TIME FOR CELEBRATION. THE WITCHER, SMILING CROOKEDLY, LISTENED TO THE COLORFULLY EMBELLISHED ANECDOTES AS TOLD BY A WILDLY GESTICULATING THORSTEIN.
- THE NIGHT WAS YOUNG, THE BEER WAS COLD, AND A POUCH FULL OF GOLD WAS SITTING HEAVY ON HIS/HER BELT. HE/SHE FELT NO PRESSING NEED TO LEAVE DOL TIRTHANA. WHAT IF THEY STAYED HERE A WHILE LONGER?
Notes
- After completing this quest, if you've completed all other quests, you are awarder the Strigas, Lihos, and Frighteners trinket.
- This is the most complex and multithreaded quest in the game.
