Mot is a Higher Vampire living near Dol Gwyn in the Talgar margraviate of Kovir and Poviss.
Biography
Like the other vampires of the Gharasham tribe, Mot remained in the regions of the North and the Nilfgaardian Empire. When he was looking for a quick drink in Novigrad—that is, blood—he came across a priestess of Freya named Sigrun. Mot would have drunk her blood had he not stopped to listen to her singing. He and Sigrun formed a relationship, spending a lot of time talking and making Mot forget about his thirst for blood.
While they were in a relationship, Sigrun was also being pursued by a mage. Eventually, the mage spread rumours about her, causing her to flee from a raging mob with Mot. Mot brought them to Dol Gwyn. There, they built a mill and spent five years together. Because Sigrun loved butterflies, Mot studied them so he could transform into a kaleidoscope of them to bring her joy. While they lived very happily, they wished for a child, but they could not have one.
After these five years, the mage struck. While Mot was out studying butterflies, the mage abducted Sigrun and set a trap for him. When Mot arrived at the mage's hut, enraged at Sigrun's disappearance, he entered the house and triggered the trap, causing an explosion. As the trap had been set for another mage, Mot survived, transforming into his vampire form as he emerged from the house. Sigrun ran into his arms, having escaped from the mage. The mage then unleashed a spell that engulfed both Mot and Sigrun in flames. Mot held Sigrun in his arms as she burned to death.
Afterwards, he buried what remained of her body and went into hibernation to regenerate.
Generations later, Mot was awoken from his sleep by whispers and the presence of mutated wolves. Someone was killing townsfolk and blaming Mot, attracting many bounty hunters and even a witcher. While he was looking out over the valley, a girl rode by and was thrown from her horse when it was spooked by him. Mot asked the girl to stay away, then transformed into a kaleidoscope of butterflies and left.
Assuming the form of a feeble, crippled child, he went to Dol Gwyn. In order to mask his scent, he spent a lot of time near the goats. While there, he witnessed the arrival of another witcher, Geralt of Rivia. That evening, Mot was still outside of town and was chased by the mutated wolves, only to be saved by Geralt. Together, they went back to town after hearing that the Beast had struck again.
Mot offered to be Geralt's squire. When Geralt refused, Mot said he knew where they kept the body of the latest victim and showed him where it was. That evening, he, Geralt, and a girl named Tila left Dol Gwyn to go to the place where Tila had seen the vampire. They rested on the way in the former home of the mage. While there, Mot and Tila witnessed Geralt and another witcher battling outside the house. Mot was unsure if Geralt would survive, as the other witcher was very strong and had summoned the mutated wolves. He then transformed into a kaleidoscope of butterflies again to draw the wolves away and later returned to his child form on a tree branch near the hut.
Mot and Tila then went to sleep before travelling further. When they arrived at the mill where Tila had seen the vampire, Mot remained outside on the pier. After Geralt asked him if he would not come in, the pier's boards gave way and Mot fell into the water, but he was able to swim to the other shore. Geralt and Tila then left to supposedly find a crossing.
While they were gone, Mot travelled to a nearby menhir where Geralt had slain some wolves during the night and began bathing in their blood to reapply the cover for his scent while in vampire form. Unfortunately, Geralt emerged from the woods and cut off his arm, as Mot was weakened by the Black Blood potion Geralt had mixed into the wolves' blood. He then transformed again into his child form and explained his story to Geralt and Tila.
They came up with a plan to get the mage, who had mutated himself into a witcher. Mot was brought before the townsfolk of Dol Gwyn and placed on a pyre Geralt had made, upon which he told his story. When the mage arrived, trying to kill and torture Mot, the trio sprang their trap. The mage was revealed as the actual culprit behind the murders and was then attacked by Mot, who transformed into a kaleidoscope of butterflies and tricked the mage's mutated wolves into attacking him.
Mot then left as the butterflies and returned to Sigrun's grave. When Geralt passed by later as he was leaving, Mot explained that he would not leave, as his heart was there, indicating Sigrun's grave. He said he had grown close to Geralt because he recognised the marks of fatherhood on him—marks Mot wished he had. He then wished Geralt goodbye and hoped that his path would lead him to his loved ones.
