Melusina was a mermaid and Sh'eenaz's aunt, and the estranged sister of Queen Dahut. Unknown to most though, she was also a sea witch, allowing her to use magic and shapeshift.

Consumed by jealousy and anger that her sister took her place as queen, she secretly sought vengeance against the royal family.

Biography

When she was younger, Melusina and Basim had been in love. However, when they learned Melusina was barren and thus unable to have children, Basim ended up marrying her sister, Dahut, instead to continue the royal line. This hurt Melusina, who directed her hatred towards her sister as a result, causing the sisters to have a strained relationship. Despite this, Dahut allowed Melusina to still be part of the royal family.

Many years later, Melusina secretly conspired with King Usveldt, who was unhappy with his son Agloval's relationship with Sh'eenaz. They worked together, provoking attacks on the divers, with Melusina, as a sea witch, shapeshifts into a kraken, to make the humans believe that the vodnik were carrying out the attacks on the merpeople's orders. She also disguised herself as a human princess to further drive a wedge between Sh'eenaz and Agloval and start a war between land and sea.

Vengeful conspiracy

Melusina appeared before the council, saying that she agrees with Sh'eenaz and her union with Agloval to bring peace, but clearly the kingdom does not agree with this. However, Dahut told her not to get involved in this matter, since it is something that does not concern her, while Melusina answered it did involve her since she was still part of the royal family. Melusina then provokes her sister when she brings up that the king loved her first, before leaving.

Secretly, Melusina traveled to the surface taking the form of Princess Nispen of Maribor, to be presented at a celebration of Bremervoord as a suitor for Prince Agloval. It was interrupted when a fisherman arrived fatally wounded after his boat was attacked by what he claimed were vodnik, leading Agloval to hire the monster hunter, Geralt.

Later, when war was declared and both kingdoms began to enlist, Sh'eenaz went to her aunt to express her discontent with the war and her sad breakup with Agloval, to which Melusina understands what it feels like to not be able to be with the man she loves. Melusina mentioned that since the last council meeting, she had been working on a potion that would allow her to take the human form like her lover and live on the surface, and at the same time stop the conflict. However, Sh'eenaz hesitates to know that the transformation would be painful and could leave scars, but Melusina advised her to keep the potion in case he needed it.

Just as Agloval had decided to accept the Princess of Maribor as his wife, Melusina disguised herself as the princess once more. However, just at that moment, Geralt and Jaskier entered, with the witcher revealing about who was marshaling the attacks on the fishing boats. Who killed the pearl divers was a mermaid in the form of a kraken, having Geralt found a peridot on one of the boats, a necklace which could only be carried by the royalty mermaids family. The witcher revealed that Melusina was only one who could work magic, as she was who was now among them, exposing her in her princess form. This prompted Melusina's revelation, and the king urged her to run. She attacked and killed the guards, fought and was wounded by Geralt, and then jumped out of a window and escaped back to sea.

She later interrupts the battle between the royal navy and the mermaids with a force of Vodnik. She transforms into her kraken form and attacks the flagship, killing Zelest and almost killing Jaskier. She also attacks the mermaids, swallowing Zmarra and almost swallowing Sh'eenaz, but for Geralt's intervention. She battles Geralt, having several tentacles cut off. She eventually swallows him, but he cuts his way out using a sword and witcher potion thrown to him by Essi and kills her.
